Let’s talk about Carbon Fiber IR Lamps for PET blowing
If you’re in the business of blowing PET bottles, you know the struggle of getting that plastic preform heated just right. We’ve spent a lot of time designing carbon fiber infrared (IR) quartz lamps to handle the high-speed chaos of a production line. The big difference here is the filament. We swapped out the old-school metal for carbon fiber. Why? Because it changes how the heat actually hits the plastic. Instead of just searing the outside, the heat sinks deeper into the preform. Getting the heat right Here’s the thing: carbon fiber doesn’t get as hot as tungsten, but it pushes out more of those medium-to-long wave IR rays. This is a lifesaver because you don’t have to worry about scorching the surface while you’re trying to get the core of the wall up to temperature. When you’re picking these out, keep an eye on the wattage-to-length ratio. That’s what controls your cycle time. More wattage means you can move faster, but you’ve got to make sure your oven’s airflow can keep up. If the heat just sits there, your plastic will deform, and nobody wants that. The build and the setup We use high-purity quartz for the glass envelope. It’s basically a clear shield that lets the IR energy pass right through without soaking it up. This keeps the tube from burning out too quickly, which means fewer midnight replacements for you. Most of our units use standard R7s or SK15 connectors, so you can just pop them in and go. But a quick tip: check your voltage stability. Carbon filaments are a bit more sensitive than the old coils, and a nasty voltage spike can snap them in an instant. Real-world use In a blowing machine, these lamps do the heavy lifting on the body of the preform while leaving the neck alone. One of the best parts? The warm-up time is way shorter. You can get your oven up to full speed and start producing bottles much faster after a cold start. Just one heads-up: carbon fiber is a bit more fragile when it comes to shaking. If your machine vibrates a lot, make sure those mounting brackets are tight. You don’t want the tubes rattling around, or they might crack.
