Getting Your Carbon Fiber and Paint to Cure—Fast

If you’re working with carbon fiber composites or automotive paint, you know the waiting game is the worst part. That’s why we use shortwave infrared (SWIR) lamps. Instead of heating up the air around the part and hoping for the best, these lamps shoot radiant heat straight into the material. It triggers that chemical bond—the polymerization—from the inside out. It’s a lot more direct. The Heat Factor Here is the thing: to get carbon fiber resins or high-solid paints to actually set, you need a ton of power packed into a small area. We set these lamps up for intense heat density. Because we’re pushing high wattage, we usually go with high-voltage setups to keep things stable, especially with longer tubes. But a word of warning: all that power creates a lot of heat at the lamp ends. If your housing doesn’t have enough airflow, those terminals will burn out. Simple as that. The Tech Side of Things We use high-purity quartz glass because it lets the IR light through without blocking it. When it comes to paint, we often add coatings to the elements. This is key. It stops the surface of the paint from scorching while the heat digs deeper into the primer or the carbon weave. For the wiring, we stick with R7s or Sk15 connectors. They stay put, even in vibrating industrial racks. If you’ve already got a curing array, these are basically drop-in replacements. No need to rebuild your whole setup. A Few Things to Watch Out For Shortwave IR is fast. Like, “hours turned into minutes” fast. But you have to be careful with your spacing. If the lamp is too close, you’ll run into “skinning.” That’s when the top layer of paint hardens too quickly and traps solvents underneath, which is a nightmare to fix. To avoid that, I always suggest a PID controller. It uses real-time sensors to tweak the power so you don’t accidentally overshoot your target temperature and ruin a piece.
