The Real Deal on Carbon Fiber Heating Lamps
Forget those old-school metal filaments. We’ve moved on to something better. By tucking a carbon fiber core inside a quartz tube, we can pump out shortwave infrared radiation. Here is why that actually matters: you aren’t wasting energy heating up the air in the room. The heat goes straight to your target. It’s direct. It’s efficient. Getting the Power Right When you’re picking out a lamp, keep a close eye on your voltage and wattage. That’s what controls your heat flux. If you cram high wattage into a short tube, you get a seriously concentrated heat zone. But be careful here. You’ve got to match your power supply to the lamp’s rated voltage exactly. If you push too many amps through a low-voltage tube, you’ll fry the carbon fiber in no time. It’s a quick way to kill a perfectly good lamp. The Build and the Connections We wrap the carbon fiber in high-purity quartz. It keeps the element from oxidizing and stops the glass from cracking when you switch the heat on and off rapidly. For the connectors, we usually go with R7s or Sk15. They’re simple, drop-in replacements for most industrial heaters. More importantly, they create a tight seal. In environments where things are shaking or vibrating, a loose connection leads to arcing—and arcing leads to failure. We want to avoid that. Where This Actually Works (and the Gotchas) If you’re doing PET blowing, curing paint, or welding plastic, these lamps are a dream. The shortwave output hits the surface almost instantly. Your warm-up time drops from minutes to seconds. It’s a huge win for your workflow. But there’s a catch. These lamps put out an intense amount of heat in a small space. Your housing needs to be able to take it. If your cooling fans aren’t up to the task, you’re going to see your reflectors warp. My advice? Give your thermal shielding a once-over every 500 hours. Just make sure the heat isn’t leaking back into your control electronics and causing a headache.
