
Quartz vs. Carbon Fiber: Which IR Heater Actually Fits Your Setup?
When we’re designing IR lamps for a machine, it really comes down to what you’re trying to achieve. Are you curing a heavy-duty coating or just trying to get a sauna up to temperature? The choice between quartz and carbon fiber changes everything. The Heat Factor Quartz lamps are the heavy hitters. They’ve got a tungsten filament tucked inside a high-purity silica tube. The result? They get screaming hot, and they do it fast. Carbon fiber is a different beast. Instead of that intense, concentrated heat, you get a much more even glow across the whole lamp. It’s smoother. Now, you’ll see a bunch of different voltages and wattages. Here’s the catch: if you cram too much wattage into a short tube, you get massive heat density. That’s great for speed, but if your ventilation is garbage, those tubes are going to burn out way faster than they should. Getting Them Installed We stick to standard connectors like R7s or Sk15 for our quartz lamps. Why? Because nobody wants to rebuild their entire lamp holder just to swap a bulb. It should just slide in and work. But be careful. Quartz is tough against heat, but it’s brittle. One clumsy move during installation and—snap—you’ve got a broken tube and a wasted afternoon. That’s where carbon fiber shines. It’s not nearly as fragile. This is why you see them in saunas or low-pressure setups. They’re more forgiving and give off a softer kind of warmth. Which one do you actually need? If you’re doing PET blowing, drying paint, or running industrial ovens and you need the temperature to spike now, go with quartz. It’s fast. Really fast. But if you’re looking for broad, steady heat without those annoying hotspots, carbon fiber is your best bet. Just a quick tip: make sure your controllers are tuned to the lamp’s resistance. Otherwise, you’ll be spending your morning replacing blown fuses.
