
How we actually build carbon infrared heaters for saunas
Most sauna heaters just bake the air around you. It’s like sitting in a giant oven. We do things differently. We use carbon infrared heaters to move that heat away from the air and put it directly into your body. Because we use carbon-fiber filaments, we get far-infrared (FIR) radiation. Instead of just scorching your skin, this kind of heat sinks deep into your muscles. You get that deep, relaxing warmth without having to turn the room into a furnace. Getting the power right Here’s the thing about wattage and voltage: it’s all a balancing act. We aim for a steady, low-intensity heat. Why? Because if you push the filament too hard, it’ll just burn out. You also have to watch the “footprint.” If you jam too much power into a tiny area, you’ll get hotspots. That’s a quick way to ruin your sauna walls. We find it’s much better to spread the emitters across the panels. It keeps the heat even and keeps the wood safe. The guts of the machine Inside, there’s a carbon heating element tucked into a high-grade quartz tube. You’ve probably noticed that these don’t have that blinding white light you see in halogen lamps. That’s because carbon runs cooler. It creates a “soft” heat that feels more natural. But saunas are wet. Really wet. That quartz tube is there to keep the moisture away from the filament. Just a heads-up: the seals have to be perfect. If even a little bit of humidity leaks into the electrode leads, the whole thing is going to fail way sooner than it should. A few tips for installation Wiring these is pretty simple, but don’t forget that metal expands when it gets hot. Give your mounting brackets some breathing room. And be careful. Seriously. These tubes are fragile. If you drop one during the install, the filament can crack, and then you’re starting over. One last thing: don’t expect instant heat. These aren’t shortwave lamps. They take a bit longer to hit their peak temperature. Just make sure your control system is set up for a slower ramp-up so you don’t trip a breaker the moment you flip the switch.
