These aren’t your run-of-the-mill pipes. We use pultruded or rolled carbon fiber, which basically means that even when you’ve got the tube extended to its limit, it stays stiff. No annoying shaking. No bowing. The fit is everything. If the inner and outer diameters aren’t just right, you get that annoying “slop” or wobble. We machine these to tight tolerances so the movement feels smooth and locked-in. Now, carbon fiber is great because it doesn’t bend under pressure the way aluminum does. But here’s the catch: you can’t get too greedy with the weight. If you make the walls too thin, you risk crushing the tube the moment you tighten a clamp. It’s all about finding that sweet spot. Dealing with the friction Here’s the thing about carbon fiber—it’s stiff, but it’s also abrasive. If you let carbon rub against carbon, they’ll essentially grind each other down. To stop that, we usually pop in some POM or PTFE bushings between the stages. It acts like a lubricant, so everything slides easily and lasts way longer. Plus, unlike metal, these tubes don’t freak out when the temperature changes. Your clearances stay the same whether it’s freezing or boiling outside. The trade-offs You get massive weight savings, but you have to remember that carbon fiber is brittle. It doesn’t bend; it snaps. If your gear is going to be hitting rocks or taking heavy side-impacts, you’ll want a protective wrap or a hybrid weave to toughen it up. We see these used a lot in camera booms, antenna masts, or aerospace parts where every single gram counts. Just a heads-up: be careful with your locking mechanism. If you pinch the tube too hard, you’ll crack the resin, and then you’ve got a problem.
